SOLVING OIL SANDS & TAILING POND CHALLENGES
Unconsolidated sandstone deposits known as oil sands are comprised primarily of sand, clay, and water-saturated with bitumen.
Bitumen is a highly viscous and extra-heavy hydrocarbon with an average API gravity of 8°. It can be separated into two organic compounds: asphaltenes and maltenes.
Asphaltenes have a heavy molecular structure, imparting a high viscosity and density to the oil. They contain nickel, sulfur, vanadium, and ultra-fine particles that reduce the quality of the produced crude oil and make it expensive and difficult to transport and refine.
The main challenge facing mining (SAGD) operations is obtaining higher profit margins from bitumen without generating toxic tailing ponds (mining operations), and without requiring large amounts of diluent, chemical, or energy (SAGD).

TRACTION & PRODUCTION STATUS
M-CRACK TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL (TRL)
Alfaluz’s M-CRACK system cannot be easily and directly categorized according to the standard TRL criteria for each level, because the materials needed to test and prove the process is different at each level.
With the Alfaluz process, each upgrading step is easier, not more difficult. If the technology is successfully tested in a laboratory in TRL 4, then it will automatically work better at each following testing and operational level.
Although by the standard TRL definition the it appears to meet the Level 6 criteria, M-CRACK is effectively at TRL 7 for bitumen and heavy oil treatment.
